Blokes' lunch boosts health - Friday 9th September 2011, Sharkies
COMMUNITY support has been overwhelming for the Lunch for Blokes fund-raiser for research into men's health.
Almost half of the 400 available tickets have been sold for the lunch, which will raise funds to support research and programs associated with men's health problems, including depression, bowel cancer, prostate cancer and heart disease.
Former Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr and radio show host and television personality Glenn Wheeler have organised the event to highlight matters relating to men's health in the informal and relaxed atmosphere of a classic, long Friday afternoon lunch.
The lunch will be held at Sharkies leagues club on Friday, September 9. Tickets are $110 or $1000 for a table of 10, which includes a three-course meal, beer, wine, soft drinks and entertainment.

FORMER Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr has decided on his first big project after leaving politics.
He is putting his efforts into fund-raising for research into men’s health concerns, through his membership in Caringbah Rotary.
Together with radio show host and television personality Glenn Wheeler, Mr Kerr will host Lunch for Blokes at Sharkies leagues club on Friday, September 9, with proceeds going to support research and programs associated with depression, bowel cancer, prostate cancer and heart disease.
‘‘I know what it is like to have a few health problems,’’ Mr Kerr said.
‘‘I had a bout of depression last year. So, after 27 years in politics, I felt I wanted to give something back to the community and I thought I would like to focus on men’s health problems.’’
Mr Kerr hoped several hundred people would attend the lunch, which he planned to host annually.
Entertainment will be provided by comedian Paul Martell and ventriloquist Darren Carr.
‘‘I hope it is an entertaining time with a short, sharp message,’’ he said.
Mr Wheeler said the concept was to talk about men’s health in a fun way.
‘‘It’s about a bunch of blokes getting together over a beer and lunch to talk about health issues,’’ he said.
‘‘My father died of prostate cancer three years ago and it made me realise that we need to do as much as possible to keep things in check.
‘‘But rather than a heavy message, we hope to talk about it in a blokey setting in a long, classic lunch on a Friday afternoon.
‘‘We are hoping they will walk away with a new consciousness about their health and that they will go and get a check-up.
‘‘It’s not secret men’s business and it’s not exclusively men. Women are welcome to come along.
‘‘We are really looking for support from our wives and partners. We want the girls to encourage their men to go to this lunch and come away with a motivated, positive feeling about taking care of their health.’’
‘‘We look after our cars, our boats, our motorbikes and everything else we keep in the garage. But we don’t tend to look after the one big engine that counts, ourselves.’’
